Newest Blog Post

PHOENIX UNBOUND and Other News

My website guru, Kathryn, has been busy putting a new dress on my website, and it looks awesome. And she gently reminded me that my blog has languished for some time.

Mea culpa, folks. I’m very good at keeping up on Facebook but have let the blog posting slide. It’s a bit late in the year to do a New Year’s resolution, but I’ll try and do better with putting out more regular posts. As such, no time like the present, and I have lots of news.

PHOENIX UNBOUND is my newest novel-length story that’s coming out September 25, 2018 from Penguin-Ace. It’s currently available as a pre-order in both e-book and print format at all the various retailers (links provided below). There will also be an unabridged audio version, and as soon as that’s available, I’ll let y’all know. Not sure yet about my narrator for the audio yet. I’d love to have Gabrielle Baker handle it and made that suggestion to the audio team at PRH Audio, but that kind of stuff is mostly out of my hands beyond making the suggestion, so fingers crossed. Gabrielle narrated RADIANCE, EIDOLON, and BENEATH A WANING MOON, and I adore her voice.

This story takes place in a brand new world separate from the one of The Wraith Kings and Master of Crows and involves a corrupt empire, steppe nomads and of course, magic. It’s the first in a trilogy, and while we have a tentative title for the second book, I don’t think I can advertise it just yet. When I can, I’ll post about it.

The artwork for the PHOENIX UNBOUND cover was created by the supremely talented Arantza Sestayo, who’s also illustrated covers for fantasy author Juliet Marillier‘s Blackthorn & Grim series. I fell in love with the cover when Penguin sent me the basic black and white sketch. Because this book is published through Penguin, I had no control over the cover other than to, once again, offer a preliminary suggestion, so I was thrilled when I got this cover and think Penguin knocked it out of the park.

I’ll also be doing a book signing at Murder by the Book in Houston on September 28, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. Best part of that? I’m signing with Ilona Andrews! Woohoo! They’ll be there signing their latest and last book in the NYT Bestselling Kate Daniels series, Magic Triumphs. If you stop by, I’d love to see you and say hi.

Other news: THE IPPOS KING (Wraith Kings Book #3) is scheduled to go out at the very end of 2018 and no earlier. This is mostly due to contractual restrictions from Penguin. The noncompete clause gives me a very narrow window of opportunity to self publish other novel-length work that won’t “compete” with PHOENIX UNBOUND. So my two windows to publish THE IPPOS KING basically restricted me to no later than July 24th or no earlier than December 26th. I won’t be meeting the July 24th deadline by a longshot, so end of year it is, though it may not be December 26th. I’ll keep y’all updated on the book’s progress as I get closer to the release timeframe and can give a more exact publish date.

If you take a look at my website, you’ll see a cover for THE IPPOS KING. That’s a placeholder cover. I originally had my artist Isis Sousa illustrate a cover for it (she illustrated the covers for the first two books); however, Isis is moving her art toward a different direction than book covers and will no longer be able to do my cover art for this series. Because books #3 – #6 in the series focus on the other Wraith Kings, I felt this would be a good breakpoint to alter the look a little on the covers, and since I’ll be using a different artist for the rest of the covers, it’s a natural spot to make the changeover.

This isn’t a “new” artist per se. If you’ve read MASTER OF CROWS and/or ENTREAT ME, then you’re familiar with my other artist Louisa Gallie. Louisa will be taking up the reins and illustrating the cover for THE IPPOS KING as well as the remainder of the books in the series (unless something changes in the future that prevents her from doing so). I’m sad to no longer be working with Isis. She’s brilliant and beautiful and a pleasure to work with. However, I can say the exact same things about Louisa, so I’m thrilled to be working with her once more on cover art.

More book stuff: I have a short novella out (dragon shifter story) in a duology I’m in with the author Dana Marton. MADFALL is our collaboration and currently available at Amazon, iTunes, and B&N. Links to the duology are listed in my Books/Other Works page on the website.

Last but not least, my newsletter is currently being revamped, and I’ll have more news to put in there along with a short story available only through the newsletter. With the new GDPR requirements, you’ll have to sign up again once it goes live. Sorry about that. Thanks to FB shenanigans, we have to jump through a lot hoops now to be compliant; however, I hope you’ll sign up again for the newsletter once it’s ready. I’ll post on here once it is and what needs to be done to sign up.

Whew! I think that’s it for now. If you stayed with me to the end, more power to you! And thanks!

Best,

Grace
